14. Strictly, this discussion applies to a simple instrument in zero field, with no matter degrading the particle energies. As discussed in detail in Ref. [2], the theoretical average 〈 a 〉 = frac(1, 3) is never observed in practice.
15. This is achieved in practise using a silver muon target. Silver possesses only a small nuclear magnetic moment, so causes minimal depolarization of the implanted muon ensemble.
