    • The purpose of muzzle brakes is to counter recoil and unwanted rising of the barrel during rapid fire. Such devices are commonly found on rifles firing very large cartridges, as well as most artillery and tank guns. Smaller rifles often have flash suppressors, which are designed to work as simple muzzle brakes. Their purpose is to reduce the visibility of the muzzle flash to preserve the shooter's night vision. For simplicity, in this paper we will use the term muzzle brake also for flash suppressors
