The reproducibility of urodynamic findings in healthy female volunteers: Results of repeated studies in the same setting and after short-term follow-up
-
This is a valuable study, in that it represents a large group of patients who have been clinically diagnosed with OAB. These patients had CUD using saline followed by KCl solution. As the authors suggest, the change with KCl infusion probably represents a problem with epithelial permeability and the resultant sensory responses in the bladder, as well as the effect on the bladder smooth muscle, as potassium will not only depolarize sensory nerves, but will readily depolarize smooth muscle and cause detrusor hyperactivity, as reported in some animal models. The data reported here contribute much to modifying the manner in which urodynamic studies are used in groups such as women with LUTS, because traditional urology would give them diagnoses based completely on symptoms of urgency and frequency, calling them 'OAB', when in fact what they really have is epithelial dysfunction causing their symptoms.
