16. In the UK, a reduction of the suicide rate was one of a number of health targets stated in 1992 in The Health of the Nation. In the US, following the description of suicide as a serious public health problem by two 1997 resolutions of the US Congress, the US Public Health Service published The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent Suicide in 1999, and the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention was outlined in 2001 (www.surgeongeneral.gov). In Australia, the Commonwealth Government first identified suicide as an issue when its prevention was recognised as a national target in 1994 in Better Health Outcomes for Australians... Subsequently, a youth suicide prevention strategy was developed in 1995, and then in 1999 the National Suicide Prevention Strategy was adopted.
