Studies such as those done by Bradbury, Parr, and Marks come close to examining neighbourhood, but still link families only with the larger urban area and economy and bypass the neighbourhood as a unit of analysis. Re-thinking the Concept of Community
-
A vast literature exists on community. For the most recent overview of this literature in a Canadian context, see John Walsh and Stephen High, 'Re-thinking the Concept of Community,' Histoire Sociale 23 (Nov. 1999): 255-73. In what follows I have borrowed my approach from economists, ethnographers, and cultural historians. Many of my ideas coalesced in the community studies seminar I co-taught as part of the Tri-University Doctoral Program. Although I cannot benefit from direct questioning and observation of those actually involved in bees, some of the sources left provide something similar to the ethnographer's notebook in that they record people doing things. I have interpreted these actions as statements. The most reliable evidence for rendering the facts are diaries and farm accounts. Bees were carefully recorded as a way of keeping accounts of work owing and as noteworthy social events. Settlers' guides often presented the 'how-to' of holding a bee because of its necessity in the backwoods and because of its central importance as an entry point into community life. Somewhat less reliable, but still very valuable, are the numerous travellers' accounts, memoirs, and late nineteenth-century settlement histories. Bees appear in these sources with regularity as they were memorable events. These stories are usually based on the author's direct memory of events, what they heard from others, or what they thought possible

John MacDougall noted that the term was not derived from the work habits of bees, but from a word from Ancient Saxon days when danger brought people together for defence, Rural Life in Canada (1913; Toronto: University of Toronto Press 1973), 132. Such forms of reciprocal labour were part of an established tradition from the Old World. Peasants in Norway, Ireland, Scotland, and elsewhere had long used reciprocal work to erect buildings, harvest produce, and create cloth. In South America a distinction was drawn between exchange labour and festive labour

Culture Structure and Process: The Occurrence and Disappearance of Reciprocal Farm Labor
-
Charles Erasmus, 'Culture Structure and Process: The Occurrence and Disappearance of Reciprocal Farm Labor,' Southwestern Journal of Anthropology 12 (1956): 445-6. Exchange labour usually included about ten people who regularly exchanged a day's work for a day's work. Festive labour could include more than one hundred people. The obligation to reciprocate was not so great, but the host was to provide extraordinary food and festivities. No such clear distinction was drawn by settlers in Ontario. Both the big barn raisings that drew large numbers and the smaller occasions when groups of neighbours regularly got together to exchange labour were called bees

I first came across the use of 'interaction episode' as an analytical tool in Rhys Isaac's The Transformation of Virginia (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press 1982), chap. 'A Discourse on the Method.' My thanks to Richard Reid for drawing my attention to this work. The concept is borrowed from ethnographers and begins with the premise that society is not primarily a material entity, but must be understood as the dynamic product of the activities of its members, a product that is shaped by the images participants have of their own and other's performances. Interaction episodes or dramatic events such as the bee are like knots of encounter in the ongoing social life and are suspended in the threads of continuing relationships. The visual image is like knots in lacework. By studying the converging threads and their nodal events we can better understand the structure, action, and meaning of society. Another useful model is to view the interaction episode as a stage play

Violence, Law, and Community in Rural Upper Canada

For a similar tension between a local social order that stressed harmony and the undercurrent of violence brought on by frontier conditions, see Susan Lewthwaite, 'Violence, Law, and Community in Rural Upper Canada,' in Jim Phillips, Tina Loo, and Susan Lewthwaite, eds., Essays in the History of Canadian Law (Toronto: University of Toronto Press 1994), 353-86. Successful work groups could manage disputes by avoiding direct confrontation; they resorted to gossip instead. To avoid recriminations they made the host responsible for decisions involving risk

Nancy Osterud goes further than most historians in understanding the rural family and community as gendered relationships. While she acknowledges that men participated in cooperative work, she still tends to see men as part of the commercial world and argues that women were the ones who sustained cooperative relations. In fact, she goes as far as to argue that women advocated a model of interdependence as an alternative to male dominance and capitalist social relations. She states that women used mutuality as a strategy of empowerment

An extreme, but nonetheless suggestive, case occurred in 1918 when a young Quebec girl dressed in male attire participated in a log-driving bee, and, when exposed, was sentenced to two years at the Portsmouth Penitentiary in Kingston. I would like to thank my mother, Mrs Jean Wilson, the great-granddaughter of Lucy, for treasuring our family heirlooms and assisting me in reconstructing the family relationships. The value of using farm womens' diaries is amply revealed in Laurel Ulrich's Pulitzer Prize-winning book A Midwife's Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard, Based on Her Diary, 1785-1812 (New York: Vintage Books 1990)
