Priming by airborne signals boosts direct and indirect resistance in maize
-
This paper extends the pioneering work by Engelberth et al. by demonstrating that exposure to VOCs from caterpillar-infested corn plants did not activate defense responses in other maize plants directly, but primed the plants for earlier and/or stronger expression of a specific set of defense-related genes and potentiated emission of aromatic and terpenoid compounds. The potentiation of defense responses correlated with reduced caterpillar feeding and development and with greater attraction of parasitic Cotesia marginiventris wasps.
