1. In her 1998 autobiography (written with Layli Miller Bashir), Do They Hear You When You Cry, she spelled her surname "Kassindja." In the press at the time, and often still today, she was referred to as "Kasinga," a misspelling (and mispronunciation) that apparently resulted from an Immigration and Naturalization Service official's error. Since this essay deals with documents that use the erroneous spelling, I retain it here.
