Stassen FR, Vega-Cordova X, Vliegen I, Bruggeman CA. Immune activation following cytomegalovirus infection: more important than direct viral effects in cardiovascular disease? J Clin Virol 2006; 35:349-353. This interesting review provides a new method of analyzing CMV-mediated allograft damage. The authors present and discuss recent findings pointing to the ability of single components of the viral particle to elicit an adverse reaction in the host, independent from the active viral replication.

Clin Infect Dis 2006; 43:869-880. This important study partially makes up for the lack of direct comparisons between prophylaxis and the preemptive approach for prevention of CMV disease. While showing that the two strategies appear equally effective for prevention of CMV disease, prophylaxis appears to have an additional benefit related to patient survival.
