    • Loss and recovery of wings in stick insects
    • 1 Structure of the colony. 0 = stolonal; 1 = erect; 2 = sessile. Stolonal colonies have polyps with a pedicel issuing from the hydrorhiza. Sessile colonies are similar to stolonal ones but the hydranths do not have a pedicel. In these two cases all other characters of organisation are inapplicable. Erect colonies have at least two polyps on each erect part. In many colonies, it is possible to find both erect and stolonal parts. In such cases the state 'erect' was applied as this represents the more mature ontogenetic stage (see Materials and methods). The character is coded as 'polymorphic' if different states are observed in differently developed colonies. 2 Branching pattern of erect colonies. 0 = not ramified; 1 = ramified. Non-ramified erect colonies are those in which all hydranths - with or without a pedicel - are disposed along a single primary axis. In ramified colonies they are disposed along a branched axis.
