These two questions have consumed meta-discussions about the American South. Since the 1960s, academic and popular books have been routinely published offering arguments on behalf of a disappearing or enduring South. Some telling titles are Richard N. Three Worlds Theory: End of a Debate
-
London: Verso
-
Not all countries labeled "Third World" are poor, uneducated, and rural. Venezuela has a per capita income comparable to that of France, Uruguay has 100% literacy, and Brazil and Argentina have very urban cultures. These three words are proffered not as a description or definition of "Third World" but rather only as common connotations associated with the term in mainstream U.S. culture. For an analysis and critique of the term "Third World," see Aijaz Ahmad, "Three Worlds Theory: End of a Debate," In Theory: Classes, Nations, Literatures (London: Verso, 1992), pp. 287-318
