The bottom of the serpentinite layer appears to be also slightly diffusive because it is not resolved in the higher-frequency image SOM, If serpentinization of the mantle peridotite occurs in an equilibrium manner, this boundary may be expected to be sharp. Our result, however, does not support this scenario. The detailed mechanism of water transportation in the mantle wedge is poorly known, and some additional factor appears to be necessary to fully explain our observation
