- A prospective audit of hypospadias correction in a regional paediatric surgery centre
- This technique described for distal hypospadias repair is not original or fully new. Indeed, the basic principles of this technique are well known, as the authors confirmed in their report. The basic principle is not a 'meatal' mobilization, but the 'distal urethra' is mobilized forward. Indications and mainly contraindications of distal urethral advancement procedures were reiterated by the authors. The main complication is the risk of long-term meatal stenosis. However, in the present 'era' of the tubularized incised plate (TIP) urethroplasty, the 'MEMO' technique can be considered a good 'memo' of a procedure that was widely adopted two decades ago. The distal urethral advancement techniques and variants, associated with proper glansplasty (as in the DUAGO and MEMO procedures), are confirmed to be safe and effective surgical methods to repair a wide group of coronal/subcoronal hypospadias, offering good results when compared with the TIP and with the flip-flap techniques.
