The impact of reflux composition on mucosal injury and esophageal function

Stem cells and cancer: An intimate relationship

An interesting view on the tumour carcinogenesis of gastrointestinal tract. The potential role of self-renewing stem cells which seem to be entirely responsible for sustaining the tumour as well as giving rise to proliferating but progressively differentiating cells that are responsible for much of the cellular heterogeneity

Csendes A, Braghetto I, Burdiles P, et al. Regression of intestinal metaplasia to cardiac or fundic mucosa in patients with Barrett's esophagus submitted to vagotomy, partial gastrectomy and duodenal diversion. A prospective study of 78 patients with more than 5 years of follow up. Surgery 2006; 139:46-53. The paper suggests that this complex operation (vagotomy and antrectomy combined with duodenal bile diversion) may become an attractive option as a definitive surgical treatment in patients with long segment Barrett's esophagus.
