Rice TW, Rodriguez RM, Light RW. The superior vena cava syndrome: clinical characteristics and evolving etiology. Medicine 2006; 85:37-42. Retrospective case series of 78 patients with SVC syndrome. Benign etiologies were the cause in 40% of cases, with intravascular devices accounting for 70% of the benign cases. This study demonstrated that respiratory symptoms were more common with malignant compared with benign etiologies.

Rice TW, Rodriguez RM, Barnette R, et al. Prevalence and characteristics of pleural effusions in superior vena cava syndrome. Respirology 2006; 11:299-305. First study evaluating the prevalence and characteristics of pleural effusions in both benign and malignant cases of SVC syndrome. More than half the patients had pleural effusions, regardless of etiology. The effusions were usually small with either exudative or chylous properties. None were transudates.
