An excellent retrospective review of 111 children who underwent laparoscopic (n=59) or open appendectomy for perforated appendicitis over a period of 36 months, again demonstrating a lower rate of complications and shorter hospital stay in the laparoscopy group.
11. Mallick MS, Al-Qahtani A, Al-Bassam A. Laparoscopic appendectomy is a favorable alternative for complicated appendicitis in children. Pediatr Surg Int 2006; 23:257-259. An excellent review of 59 children with complicated appendicitis (perforation, gangrene of the appendix, appendicular phlegmon or abscess) demonstrating the feasibility and safety of laparoscopy in this challenging subgroup.

A retrospective review of 120 children with perforated appendicitis who underwent laparoscopic (n=43) or open appendectomy. This study challenges the initial concerns regarding laparoscopic appendectomy for perforated appendicitis by suggesting that the infectious complication rate is the same and that the overall complication rate is lower with the laparoscopic approach.

An excellent overview of the subject with emphasis on the high rate of salvage of ovarian tissue even in the face of what appears to be frank necrosis, and the utility of laparoscopy as a highly accurate diagnostic tool and a therapeutic intervention with excellent results.
