After Sanjay's death, Rajiv Gandhi, Indira Gandhi's other son and ultimately her successor, was thrust into the limelight along with his Italian-born wife Sonia. Rajiv was murdered in 1991; Sonia Gandhi is currently leader of the Congress party, which heads the United Progressive Alliance coalition government that took power following the 2004 general election.
