ASTEROID Investigators. Effect of very high-intensity statin therapy on regression of coronary atherosclerosis: the ASTEROID trial. JAMA 2006; 295:1556-1565. This excellent prospective study showed that high-intensity statin therapy using rosuvastatin 40 mg achieved an average low-density lipoprotein cholesterol of 60.8 mg/dl and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol by 14.7%, which resulted in a significant regression of atherosclerosis.
