1. Alistair Beaton, The Little Book of New Labour Bollocks (Great Britain: Pocket Books, 2000). This is, for my money, the most incisive analysis of New Labour extant, and I am grateful to Chris Brown for giving me a copy. I especially recommend the appendix, ‘A Glossary for Beginners: How to Talk Bollocks and Get Ahead in New Labour Britain!’ This is reminiscent of the appendix on Newspeak in Nineteen Eighty-Four - except that it is reality rather than fiction.
2. To quote Philip Larkin in ‘Churchgoing’, ‘Someone would know: I don't’. I think it is some seventeenth-century lawyer, but does anybody know?
3. Many of the victims of Donald P. Green and Ian Shapiro, Pathologies of Rational Choice Theory (New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1994) are guilty as charged for this reason. But rational choice analysis of the net effect of uncoordinated individual actions is a very different story, as elementary supply-and-demand theory in economics illustrates.
