The initial contact with a respondent was, in most cases, made through an intermediary who usually arranged an appointment to visit. This preliminary meeting was used to explain the purpose of the research project to the respondent and the type of questions that would be asked. Permission was asked to tape the interviews and it was made explicit at this stage that a transcribed copy of the interview would be returned to them and any sensitive material would be removed if requested. Respondents were promised that their material would be presented anonymously and therefore pseudonyms are used throughout the text. The tapes and transcripts are in the possession of the author
