Among the different meta-analyses performed in NPC to evaluate the effect of chemotherapy, this is the only one based on the collection of updated individual patients' data from randomized trials. Concomitant chemo-radiotherapy was the most effective treatment combination.

Hyperfractionated or accelerated radiotherapy in head and neck cancer: an individual patient data meta-analysis of 15 randomized trials. Lancet 2006; 368:843-854. This meta-analysis is based on the collection of updated individual HNSCC patients' data from randomized trials comparing conventional radiotherapy versus altered fractionated radiotherapy (accelerated and/or hyperfractionated). Altered fractionated radiotherapy was found to improve significantly both loco-regional control and survival; the hyperfractionated type of radiotherapy being the most effective regimen.

Proc Am Soc Clin Oncol 2004; 22:490s. This report from the EORTC shows for the first time in a randomized study a survival advantage in favour of induction TPF, as compared with induction PF. In addition, the toxicity was slightly reduced with the TPF regimen.
