An original communication which studies 30 patients new to HPN and over the first year. Results show QoL improved over the first 6 months, especially in Mental Health and Emotional Role. No difference was found in QoL between those receiving telemedicine or telephone contact with the base hospital.

This paper uses three case histories to demonstrate how many factors can influence the patients reaction to HPN and highlights the role of a dedicated Psychological Medicine Unit closely allied to a nutrition service.

Clin Nutr 2006; 25:693-700. This paper is useful as it describes the QoL assessment routinely being performed throughout Europe. Out of the 10 centres which monitored QoL, six used SF-36 and four used nonvalidated instruments.

QoL of 18 patients on HPN and 12 who underwent intestinal transplant was compared. Results indicate certain domains of the SF-36 to be lower in the HPN group. They state that it is still not possible to offer intestinal transplantation as an alternative to HPN.
