This figure is only meant to illustrate the concept and is not an actual cost calculation for any particular task. Given the costs spent on information technology systems, the implicit belief that the cost of information is substantially less than the cost of wasted time, energy, and material is widely prevalent in practice. Also, while any human task, no matter how inefficient, also uses information. However, it would be represented equally in both bars; hence, it can be removed from both bars to focus on the addition of new information substituting for wasted time, energy, and material. A much fuller treatment of this is contained in the author’s forthcoming book, PLM: Driving the Next Wave of Productivity through Product Lifecycle Management (McGraw-Hill)
