The favor shown to "Iranis" over "Turanis" that Subrahmanyam notes seems odd in the light of this Timurid emphasis, but a possible explanation is that by the seventeenth century "Turani" referred not broadly to "Turks" but more narrowly to Uzbeks, while "Irani" indicated the Safavi heirs of the Timurids, of whatever ethnicity, then at the height of their cultural development. If that is the case, then the decrease in the number of "Turanis" in high positions may reflect not an ethnic reorientation but merely a political realignment
