Report of 29th Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights
-
The South African Commissioner Barney Pityana was willing to ask the Namibian government during the examination of its state report at the twenty-ninth session whether the statements made by the President and Minister of Home Affairs and other leading politicians that gay and lesbian people should be arrested and thrown into jail for no reason but that they are gay and lesbian, were inflammatory and incite unlawful arrests and ordinary citizens to harass and victimize people for no reason but their sexual orientation. The question was not answered by the government delegation. (on file with authors)

-
For example, at the thirty-seventh session of the Commission in April 2005, Mauritanian NGOs and others complained that the state report from the Mauritanian government had been only recently submitted, and was therefore not included as an item on the draft agenda. They were therefore only aware of the oral examination when they arrived at the session and so did not have time to prepare a shadow report.
