    • The ground-state vibrational frequency, v0, of a diatomic molecule can be calculated according to the following equation: v0, 1/1πc √(kf/μ, where c is the speed of light, k f force constant of the chemical bond, and the effective mass μ, m1m2(m1, m2) with m1 and m2 being the masses of the two atoms, respectively. On the basis of the above equation, replacement of hydrogen by deuterium in a C-H bond will lower the vibrational frequency by a factor of 0.734. For the above equation, please see: Nakanishi, K, Solomon, P. H. Infrared Absorption Spectroscopy; Holden-Day: Oakland, CA, 1977; Chapter 1
