Carapetis JR, Steer AC, Mulholland EK, Weber M: The global burden of group A streptococcal diseases. Lancet Infect Dis (2005) 5(11):685-694. •• This report reviews recent population-based data to estimate the global burden of GAS diseases. It provides information on the prevalence of RHD and incidence of RF, and mortality from acute RF and RHD, in addition to other RHD-related morbidity and mortality, such as stroke. Information on disease burden is also presented for invasive GAS diseases, acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, pyoderma and pharyngitis.

Quinn A, Kosanke S, Fischetti VA, Factor SM, Cunningham MW: Induction of autoimmune valvular heart disease by recombinant streptococcal M protein. Infect Immun (2001) 69(6):4072-4078. • A rat model of streptococcal-induced autoimmune valvulitis was developed in which rats were injected subcutaneously with GAS M protein. The results of this study suggest that the M protein contains epitopes that are cross-reactive with heart antigens, and that these may be stimulated in vivo, resulting in pathology.
