note
-
Such large values are surprising. The upper limit of the Poisson ratio is 0.5, corresponding to an incompressible medium [see for instance: A.E.H. Love, A Treatise on the Mathematical Theory of Elasticity, (Dover, NewYork, 1944) p. 103. Or: O.H. Varga, Stress-strain behaviour of elastic materials, (Interscience, New-York, 1966) p. 108]. In an anisotropic medium the ratio has to be calculated from the transverse area, leading to the same limit. In poly-DCH, the measured lateral contraction is fairly isotropic. Since the crystal is certainly not incompressible, the experimental value should be smaller than 0.5, and probably close to the generally found value of about 1/3.
