Experimental work undertaken in our laboratory after submission of this manuscript resulted in the first report of the d Πg3 c u+3 band system of C2. The spectroscopic constant B0 of the c u+3 state was measured to be 1.9218 (2) cm-1 to be compared to a value of 1.9204 cm-1 derived in this work. A preliminary analysis of the experimental data has yielded vibrational constants which are consistent with the ab initio predictions in this work.
