The de Boer team incorrectly claims that the gaseous vent hypothesis was rejected by archaeologists for nearly a century "because of the authority of Amandry," the French archaeologist who showed that there was no physical evidence for a fissure. But the gaseous vent account was rejected because (1) the ancient textual evidence is problematic and sometimes contradictory, and (2) there was no physical evidence.
