This study discusses how factors such as the ability to communicate emotions and distress, feelings of insecurity and perceived danger, feeling exposed in the labour situation, and societal norms associated with childbirth-related behavior contribute to childbirth-related fears among both men and women. The study also describes gender differences in relation to these fears and the factors contributing to it.

37. Adewuya AO, Ologun U, Ibiqbami OS. Posttraumatic stress disorder after childbirth in Nigerian women: prevalence and risk factors. BJOG 2006; 113:284-288. An excellent study, the first of its kind in the developing world, which emphasizes the role of pregnancy complications, the woman's subjective hospital birth experience, and childbirth-related technology in PTSD symptoms among women from Nigeria. The study found a higher prevalence of PTSD compared with the West and emphasizes the need for preventive interventions in this area.

39. Small R, Lumley J, Toomey L. Midwife-led debriefing after operative birth: four to six year follow-up of a randomized trial. BMC Med 2006; 4:3. A randomized controlled trial that assessed the effect of a short debriefing intervention among women who had an operative birth. There were no adverse effects and also no benefits on long-term follow up.
40. Engel SM, Berkowitz GS, Wolff MS, Yehuda R. Psychological trauma associated with the world trade centre attacks and its effect on pregnancy outcome. Paediatr Perinat Epidemiol 2005; 19:334-341. Anteresting and important study, which showed that, among women who were pregnant and in close vicinity to the site of the trauma, stress and PTSD was related to low head circumference among infants.

42. Ross LE, Mclean LM. Anxiety disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period: a systematic review. J Clin Psychiatry 2006; 67:1285-1298. A comprehensive review of articles related to all types of anxiety disorders in the pregnancy and postpartum period. The findings emphasize the importance of anxiety disorders in pregnancy and report higher rates of obsessive-compulsive disorders and generalized anxiety disorders in postpartum compared with the general population.
43. Broen AN, Moum T, Bodtker AS, Ekeberg O. The course of mental health after miscarriage and induced abortion: a longitudinal, five-year follow-up study. BMC Med 2005; 3:18. One of the few studies comparing psychiatric morbidity among women with spontaneous miscarriages and those who had induced abortions. The authors found higher morbidity in the latter group.

45. Ashkani H, Akbari A, Heydari ST. Epidemiology of depression among infertile and fertile couples in Shiraz, Southern Iran. Indian J Med Sci 2006; 60:399-406. This study reported the prevalence and predictors of depression among women with infertility and reported a longer duration of infertility as an important predictor.
46. Gulseren L, Cetinay P, Tokatlioglu B, et al. Depression and anxiety levels in infertile Turkish women. J Reprod Med 2006; 51:421-426. The authors report culture specific factors in Turkey that are associated with anxiety and depression in women with infertility.
47. Cox SJ, Glazebrook C, Sheard C, et al. Maternal self-esteem after successful treatment for infertility. Fertil Steril 2006; 85:84-89. An important finding of this study was that once there is a successful pregnancy, there is no difference in self-esteem among women who had natural pregnancies and those who had in-vitro fertilization.
48. Verhaak CM, Smeenk JM, Evers AW, et al. Predicting emotional response to unsuccessful fertility treatment: a prospective study. J Behav Med 2005; 28:181-190. This study found that, among women going through assisted reproduction, pretreatment helplessness and marital dissatisfaction were risk factors and perceived support and acceptance were protective factors for emotional health.

52. Cohen LS, Soares CN, Vitonis AF, et al. Risk for new onset of depression during the menopausal transition: the Harvard study of moods and cycles. Arch Gen Psychiatry 2006; 63:385-390. A longitudinal prospective study that examines the relationship between transition to menopause and occurrence of first lifetime episode of depression. It reveals increased risk of first episode of depression in women entering menopausal transition at an earlier age.
53. Cohen LS, Soares CN, Joffe H. Diagnosis and management of mood disorders during the menopausal transition. Am J Med 2005; 118 (12 Suppl 2):93-97. This study reviews the risk factors for and prevalence of depression in women undergoing menopausal transition and then deals with available evidence for hormonal and nonhormonal strategies used to treat the depression.
54. Schmidt PJ. Mood, depression, and reproductive hormones in the menopausal transition. Am J Med 2005; 118 (12 Suppl 2):54-58. A comprehensive review that critically evaluates the available literature on relationship of depression and transition to menopause and then assesses the hormonal basis of this relationship.
