There is a strong argument put forward by 'conomic rationalists' that such activities lead to a more equitable distribution of resources. While this can be justified in the short term, I would argue that, without a sound framework of personal human values, the long-term outcomes may lead to greater disparities and a potential 'Easter Island' world for our descendants! For some aspects of this debate, see Peter Singer, How are We to Live (Melbourne: Text Publishers, 1993).

May's discussion of the role of professions in society today and the need to reinvigorate earlier principles is worthwhile additional reading on this theme. See W. May, 'Ethics and the Professions', Applied Ethics Centre Working Paper, St. John's College, University of Queensland, 1995.
