Proctor M, Proctor K, Shu XZ, et al. Composition of hyaluronan affects wound healing in the rabbit maxillary sinus. Am J Rhinol 2006; 20:206-211. This study demonstrates the effect of differing modifications of the same starting material. Using an animal model of sinus wounding, both ostial diameter and histological examination showed significant differences in scarring and inflammation between the biomaterials. It clearly points out the importance of chemical composition and demonstrates the need for prospective evaluation of biomaterials.
