Note that according to Ben-Naim's scheme each cation and anion is associated with a characteristic parameter (related to the respective free energy changes upon dissolution of the respective ion) that determines its effect on hydrogen bond formation between water molecules, i.e. either decrease of hydrogen bond formation (structure-breaker) or increase in hydrogen bond formation (structure-maker, In case of LiClO4 both, anion and cation, are classified as structure-breaker thus the net result upon addition of LiClO4 to aqueous solutions of PEO is to decrease the hydrogen bonds that are stabilizing the polymer in solution (eventually resulting in the precipitation of the polymer, A different behavior would be expected if the anion would be a strong structure-maker that dominates over the structure-breaking characteristics of the cation such that ion-binding might eventually occur LiF would be an example, We hope to stimulate further experimental studies to eluc

4 to aqueous solutions of PEO is to decrease the hydrogen bonds that are stabilizing the polymer in solution (eventually resulting in the precipitation of the polymer). A different behavior would be expected if the anion would be a strong structure-maker that dominates over the structure-breaking characteristics of the cation such that ion-binding might eventually occur (LiF would be an example). We hope to stimulate further experimental studies to elucidate the applicability of Ben Naim's scheme to more complex polymer-electrolyte solutions.
