A monthly opening is of course very unlikely and consultation of a book often involves multiple openings in a short time period, interspersed with long periods of non-use. However, this estimate of 1200 folds per century was felt to be a broadly realistic average. Gaye Morgan, personal communication, Aug 2005.

note
-
It is worth noting that this technique can be used as a form of 'phased' repair, allowing boards to be reattached quickly to a book which ideally might benefit from more extensive treatment, but for which board reattachment is a sensible short-term option.

note
-
It is recognized that the book joint is actually subject to many complex and interrelated stresses, of which tensile stress is only one. Although picking a book up by one board is perhaps not common, this test was developed to model a reproducible and measurable mode of mishandling. It is hoped that other testing modes can be developed in due course.

Peristaltic pumps create a flow by passing rollers in succession along the outside of a flexible tube. They are useful in medicine because only the inside of the tube needs to be sterilised, see LAROUSSE DICTIONARY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (Edinburgh: Larousse, 1995).
