    • Thanks are due to Anne Hill, Research Assistant in REPP, for her e.orts to collate data used in this chapter, and for the legwork involved in locating various elderly journal papers in the 'creepy basements' of libraries at ANU; and to Barry Hindess, for helpful observations on the inherent ambiguities of studying a dual narrative and interpreting the changing role of authorial voice over time. An earlier version of this paper was presented at The Australasian Political Studies Association Conference, Adelaide, 29 September-1 October 2004.

    • note
    • This chapter does not insist that there is a 'right' reading of Young's text or that there can only be one meaning of 'meritocracy', particularly when it is difficult to decode which early sections of the book are advocacy and which are ironic, when the real or fictional Michael Young is speaking, or even if any true words are spoken in jest. It does, however, review the political science literature with the aim of understanding the 'misunderstanding' in Young's terms as his views on the text remained consistent throughout his lifetime.

    • Young did not go on to publish this BJS paper in 1967, which is a pity-if only on the grounds that if he had done so, this really would have confused the historians.

    • note
    • It is interesting to note the dominance of American political scientists to date in both citing Young's original work and discussing meritocracy. The present volume (a book) was earlier conceived of as a special journal-based edition of The Political Quarterly and would have been the first foray into this territory within the British political science serial literature, veering neither sharply towards the utopian or dystopian versions, but reclaiming the concept in the search for a workable middle ground: a positive take on Young's ambivalence.
