Aust N Z J Psychiatry 2005; 39:401-406. This interesting report on Maori population presents evidence of cultural differences. The rates of anxiety, depressive and substance use disorders were all higher for Maori than for non-Maori individuals, suggesting that ethnicity-specific factors could be involved.

This review, based on studies in a traditional society of Pakistan, revealed that those who suffered from anxiety and depressive disorders had complaints that were predominantly somatic in nature, and indicates a resurgence of interest in the relationship between somatization and communication of affect across cultures.

The authors discuss that violence and gender disadvantage are factors contributing to CMDs and that gynaecological symptoms may be somatic equivalents of CMD in women in Asian cultures.

J Affect Disord 2005; 87:131-137. The presentation of anxiety and phobia in the Japanese population shows unique features related to cultural factors. This study noted 'relationship fears' as unique to the Japanese population.
