This report proposes a new classification system for childhood vasculitis and provides classification criteria for Henoch-Schönlein purpura, Kawasaki disease, polyarteritis nodosa, Wegener's granulomatosis, and Takayasu arteritis.

Ann Rheum Dis 2006 10 Aug [Epub ahead of print]. A group of physicians interested in the epidemiology of vasculitis provide classification criteria and a classification algorithm for polyarteritis nodosa, microscopic polyangiitis, Wegener's granulomatosis, and Churg-Strauss syndrome.

Hogan et al. defend the use of ANCA serology for classifying patients for a clinical study followed by a rebuttal from Hoffman and Langford contending that clinicopathologic classification as Wegener's granulomatosis, microscopic polyangiitis, and Churg-Strauss syndrome is required for useful clinical studies.

This epidemiologic study of patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis in New Zealand shows close similarity in clinical and serologic profiles to patients studied in Europe and North America.
