GI carcinoid tumours: Appearance of the primary and detecting metastases
-
Gore R, Berlin J, Mehta U, et al. GI carcinoid tumours: appearance of the primary and detecting metastases. Best Pract Res Clin Endocrinol Metab 2005; 19:245-263. Gore et al. provide a comprehensive compilation for the methodology of diagnosis of primary and metastatic carcinoid tumors. The description of the newest radiologic techniques, especially the section on scintigraphy, is particularly significant. This is one of the few articles that discusses these cutting edge and investigational techniques in detail.

Tumours of the midgut (jejunum, ileum and ascending colon, including carcinoid syndrome)
-
De Herder WW. Tumours of the midgut (jejunum, ileum and ascending colon, including carcinoid syndrome). Best Pract Res Clin Endocrinol Metab 2005; 19:705-715. This article provides the most inclusive review of the medical therapy available to patients not cured by surgical intervention. In particular, the concise summary of the various studies and their outcomes with chemotherapeutic agents is most relevant.

Nuclear medicine in the detection, staging and treatment of gastrointestinal carcinoid tumors
-
Oberg K, Eriksson B. Nuclear medicine in the detection, staging and treatment of gastrointestinal carcinoid tumors. Best Pract Res Clin Endocrinol Metab 2005; 19:265-276. Oberg and Eriksson provide an excellent summary of the recent advances made with PET scanning and nuclear agents; in fact, this article was the only one to review the radiolabelled somatostatin analogues employed in tumor-targeted therapy.

Introduction: Definition, historical aspects, classification, staging, prognosis and therapeutic options
-
Arnold R. Introduction: definition, historical aspects, classification, staging, prognosis and therapeutic options. Best Pract Res Clin Endocrinol Metab 2005; 19:491-505. This article provides the most thorough historical review of the histologic aspects and nomenclature attributed to carcinoid tumors since their initial description in the late 1800s. Furthermore, the description of the various classifications of carcinoids is more elaborate than in other recent literature. The section on the inherited syndromes associated with gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors is also unique to this article.
