See: DÚBE M. and STAMP P. C. E., J. Low Temp. Phys., 113 (1998) 1079, and references therein. We note that, in most cases, the apparatus is described by a single macroscopic variable, such as the center-of-mass coordinate, and a small set of states.

An apparatus involving thermodynamically unstable oscillations of a lattice of particles was considered by BLOKHINTSEV D., in Quantum Mechanics, Determinism, Causality, and Particles, edited by FLATO M., MARIC Z., MIJOLEVIC A., STERNHEIMER D. and VICIER J. P. (Reidel, Dordrecht) 1976, p. 147.

note
-
There are many reasons for avoiding superpositions of vacuum states, not only in cases where the ground state is degenerate, such as in a ferromagnet, but also for systems with metastable phases (e.g., graphite and diamond). However, we do not know of any argument that forbids the existence of such Schrödinger cat like states.

By performing a simple change of variables, it can be shown from eq. (5) that eq. (6) applies as well for odd N and E > NhΩ.
