A root-mean-square fit to the O (I) 2s22p4 multiplet gives F2(2p,2p) approx 6.9 eV, while a similar fit to the Cu (II) 3d84s2 multiplet gives F2(3d,3d) approx 11.5 eV and F4(3d,3d) approx 7.4 ev.

Since Figs. 3 and 4 were obtained from the usual LMTO one-electron potential, the Cu(3d) and O(2p) occupations were not constrained to provide the true-state energy difference curlepp- curlepd. Nevertheless, these occupations are approx 1/2 hole each, and the symmetry-averaged difference curlepp- curlepd=1.7 eV in Fig. 3 is in rough accord with the 2.11 eV constrained-occupation result for Case 2 in Table III.
