A seventh parameter (viz., a time shift between sample and reference signals) was also optimized, correcting for any artificial differences in arrival time, such as slight temperature changes (within the 0.1 °C accuracy of the thermostat), changes in the distance between the laser beam and detector, or trigger jitter. Under normal conditions, this shift only amounts to less than one channel (< 1 ns), and has a minor influence on the results of the fitting procedure. Nevertheless, the recovered amplitudes were generally more consistent when a shift search" was included.
