Hum Reprod 2006; Jun 21 [Epub ahead of print] This study on 1003 PULs generated and evaluated a new protocol to define nonviability in the PUL population to ensure no intra-uterine pregnancy would be interrupted if uterine curettage was performed. It concluded that there is no place for uterine curettage in the routine diagnostic work up of women with a PUL.

Ultrasound Obstet Gynecol 2005; 26:770-775. This study showed that varying the discriminatory zone did not significantly improve the detection of ectopic pregnancy. It concluded that a single measurement of serum hCG is not only potentially falsely reassuring but also unhelpful in excluding the presence of an ectopic pregnancy.

The use of a logistic regression model to predict the outcome of PULs is shown to compare favourably with subjective assessment by experienced operators. The model can be used by those with limited knowledge or understanding of the behaviour of serum biochemistry in the first trimester and in turn aid in the classification of PULs into those at low and those at high risk of ectopic pregnancy at 48 h.

Hum Reprod 2006; 21:1824-1831. Bayesian networks can be used to predict ectopic pregnancy in a pregnancy of unknown location population. The best Bayesian network used the gestational age, hCG ratio (hCG 48 h/hCG 0 h) and the progesterone level at 48 h and had an area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.88 for predicting ectopic pregnancy when tested prospectively.

The success rates and complications did not differ between the two groups. It was concluded that single-dose treatment could be first line therapy in selected women.
