For Tower Hamlets, we can draw on a substantial body of published work. See, for instance, the publications cited above in this paper. However, with few exceptions - see, for instance, - very little research has been undertaken in Birmingham and Oldham. Therefore, for these areas, we will use material collected during fieldtrips in 2004 for a report on the Bangladeshi Diaspora commissioned by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, UK
