Land reallocation means that the entire landholdings of a given sub-village will be pooled together and reallocated equally to each member of the sub-village. Land adjustment means that those households that have experienced a decrease in family members return land shares held by the former members of the household, while households that have increased in number are eligible to receive extra shares of land, depending on the overall availability of land within the sub-village.

Reserve land is collective land under direct management of the sub-village. The functions of reserve land as explained by some village leaders interviewed are: Generating sub-village collective income and disposal in land adjustment. Normally, reserve land is leased out to farmers for income generation. In Wang Village, villagers pay about 300 yuan per mu per year for leasing the reserve land. Each sub-village has about ten mu of reserve land.

note
-
Both male and migrant workers are exploited by their employers, in particular, and the economic system in general. And it is near to impossible for rural migrant workers to get permanent residency in urban areas due to China's household registration system that discriminates against the rural population. However, there is a small portion of male and female migrant workers that have made a breakthrough and created a good life on the margins of urban societies.
