Poisoning experiments with mercury metal to test for the presence of a palladium colloid have proved very effective with homogeneous catalysts. Adding an excess (with respect to the metal complex) of metallic mercury to the reaction mixture leads to amalgamation on the surface of a heterogeneous metal particle, thus poisoning it, but does not suppress the catalytic activity of a homogeneous palladium complex: a) D.
