32. The "mouse-tail phenomenon" was a method for identifying derivatives of opium. When a small dose of morphine was injected beneath the dorsal skin of a white mouse, its tail became stiff and bent over until it was parallel to the spinal column; depending on the quantity of the dose, this condition could last for hours. Using this method, the substance pethidine was identified as a derivative of opium.
