    • We define a "feature" as the geometrical feature or pattern deposited by AFM-mediated molecular transfer, for example, a line or a square. "Feature broadening" describes the increase in feature size (for example, width) as a consequence of surface diffusion processes (see, for example, reference [22]).

    • It is very likely that the apparent width of the features is an overestimate of the true width owing to tip imaging. The detected friction forces may very well be affected in a situation in which the AFM tip interacts with the side of the apex.

    • note
    • The originally deposited features were a set of rectangles and a cross-shaped area, respectively (see Figure S-3 in the Supporting Information); in order to read out both patterns by LFM, larger rectangular areas were scanned repeatedly with the G5 PAMAM covered tip. Thus, the originally deposited features were overinked. This pattern history explains the observed spatial variations in the fluorescence emission intensity.
