We use the notation E=Ē+E~,N=N̄+N~, etc. to indicate the total, average, and fluctuating parts of each magnitude. However, in the axis labels of the figures where different approximations are compared, we shall write only E,N, etc.

We have made an exception to the rule of selecting the most bound isotope for each mass number in the case of A=40. The most bound A=40 nucleus is Ar40 (Z=18,N=22). However, in Figs. 7 and 8 we display the results for Ca40 instead of Ar40, because Ca40 is one of the scarce examples of a stable nucleus with a double shell closure (Z=N=20).
