The interlocked cyclic and linear molecules with a labile bond in one of the molecules are in equilibrium with the discrete molecules formed by cleavage of the bond, even when the linear molecules have bulky groups at both ends. This study as well as previous ones on the effect of interlocked molecules on kinetically stabilized rotaxanes have revealed the different chemical behavior of rotaxanes and pseudorotaxanes. Herein we classified our Pt complexes with interlocked structures as semirotaxanes, although this terminology is applied similarly to pseudorotaxanes. For examples, see references [8f.h] and [22].
