A cohort of 260 "English" incomers were selected (by name) from the electoral register and telephone directory for telephone interviews; 180 (70 per cent) expressed willingness to be interviewed in depth, of whom 50 were selected.

note
-
Like other markers of ethnicity, the boundaries set by family names are blurred. A set of distinctively Welsh surnames is derived from the naming conventions of the Welsh language (Jones, Williams, Davies, Phillips, etc.), but are shared by many English families, and there aremany well-established Welsh families whose surnames are not "Welsh" in origin.
